What is the future of interactive media

“What is the future of interactive media?”

Interactive media normally refers to products and services on digital computer-based systems which respond to the user’s actions by presenting content such as text, graphics, animation, video, audio etc. (Wiki)

-concepts interaction design,
-interactivity
-human-computer interaction.

-It creates a virtual reality.
-User and machine takes an active role.
-Fun and experiential, experimental

To me, interactive media is something that involves the subject itself and its user. It need not be an digital media to be called interactive media. A simple physical object like rolling dice can be called as interactive as well. However, in the recent generation, people are looking into the digital interactive media aspect and more interactive devices are seen in places around us.

An example I recalled is the games projector in shopping centres where they will project a mini game on the floor and they detect the movement by the user’s shadow.

I find that this type of interactive media design was very thoughtful as it makes use of the space in the shopping malls into interactive games. With this device, children can find fun playing with these games and parents can enjoy their shopping.

During off peak period, these devices could be switched off as well and the space in the mall could be use like normal.

I observed that children are exceptionally happy when they play with their own shadow and the objects moves according to their movement.

However, one problem noticed when implementing these devices in the shopping mall is that it takes up space in the walking area and it causes the space of movement for the other people to walk to be lesser. Another problem is that the children are excited over the objects in the moving objects that they will step onto each other’s feet and bump into each other. Moreover, some kids would crawl on the floor while playing, this causes a possibility that other kids would step on their hand and fingers.

Although this is a fun interactive media design for kids, I think that they could improve on the interactivity by making it project on a long wall so that the the interaction would be more on the hands rather than moving. This ensures the safety of the children’s hand.

I noticed this because there was once when I and my god family brought my two 3 and 4 years old niece to Thomson shopping centre, they ran into the crowd of kids that were on this device. Everyone were excited in there. However, my 3 year old niece started crawling because she wanted to touch the rolling ball in the projected screen. However, a 6 years old girl who was running nearly landed on her fingers. Therefore, it made me remember that special care is needed when designing things for kids.

They could also barricade the place when the device is activated so that the people playing them would bump into the passer-bys.

I think that although interactive media should be fun and wild, the safety of the users should be a point too. If there is no control or safety being taken care of, accidents might happen.

What is Interaction Design?
from this video

Designing for people, interacting and getting feedback.

3Qns for interaction designer:

1: How do you do?

Something like affordance that miss Ng taught.

The user must be able to know what object to touch first. Like if he should press the button or turn the knob.

2: How do you feel ?

Whether the object give him feedback. Like if its cold or hot.

3: How do you know?

If he knows that what that product is for.

Need the user to have a overview of how everythings work.

from: Bill Moggridge’s book: Designing Interactions

An example of future of interaction design in youtube

This is a prototype where the user would use the table to know about his/her friend’s music list by placing those symbols over the bubbles. I find this very interesting as it is very visual and has a hands on interaction that allows the user to place the symbol over. The feedback of music and video excites me from continuing to use it too. However, I would assume that it is not obvious for the user to know that he needs to place the symbols over the bubbles in order to play the music.

Another example

I find that the interaction of using a marker to draw on a piece of board to control which electrical appliance to operate might come in handy. As the report says, if the user is able to control what time your appliance can be switched on before you head home, isn’t that a good technology to have? You can have your rice cooker cooking the rice, the air con switched on before you enter the house.

A new point to add to User-centered Design to me would be that it has a golden rule of helping the user to make his/ her life better. To me design can come in 2 form. 1 is very insane and fun experiential design. The other one would be a rule that a logic thinker like me would have. It is designed for a purpose that helps to make the life of everyone more efficient. Especially for lazy people like me. A simple invention would be a pulley/ lever that fulfill the rule. It is an invention though. We are suppose to push the invention to another level to benefit more.

Personally, I find that this is design would benefit me as it makes life alot easier! lol… Currently my habit is that I would come home> switch on the computer> go to shower> login to computer and dinner … then back to my computer to do my homework…. This is because my computer has a really long start up time and it requires me to login after that and back to a 10 min time for programs like MSn to run finish. Therefore, I would on the comp and do something else first before login to the computer due to my impatience. However, at times when I am too tired from school, by the time that I take my shower, the passion to continue my homework is already halved. Imagine that  I can have my computer set up before I set into my house and I come back from school being able to view my work, the passion for school work would still be there. =)

Hong Kong house

Something cool to share that I once watched. A genius architect in Hong Kong transform a very small apartment in Hongkong. From 1 room to 24 different purposes. This is more of a user-centred design that I would love! Making use of 1 item to convert it like magic. Making MY life so much better.. Imagine the cost of a room with 24 facilities as 1 price.. A 24-in-1 item is better then an item =D

Thats what I call design…

Hmm.. more spacee-saving furnitures.. These architect are genius.. They are able to making people’s life so beneficial and convenient.. They really made people’s life better with a touch of design in them. I think the future of interaction designer should learn from them.. To make an impact on other people’s life with what we can design either for the better or for the fun.

Space-saving makes things to be organized more efficiently and storing of your items are more effective with the space that you are given. However, with so many secret compartment hidden in your house, it makes searching of the items quite hard to find in the future.

Recommendation:

Therefore, maybe there could be a central memory storage where you could take picture and record down where you last stored the item in the house.

This problems had always bothered me and I observed that no matter how organize I try to be, I will still forget where I had placed my items.  This is probably because I get some part of my memory lost when I try to remember too many things. I would often say like “omg god please help me find them out”. Hoping that they will miraculously appear in front of me.

When you try to find something, they would not appear when you find them. However they would appear in front of you when you are not. I always wished that I could refer to something on where the last object was seen or where I placed it. Hence, I would ask my parents or siblings if they recall seeing it, but usually they wont bother about things too. This happens to all of the people in my family as they ask me often too.

Hence, I thought that with this central memory storage thing could be the future of interactive media. We could make it create profiles for each member and scan the look of this object into the machine and record down the place it is stored.

Example:

The user could detect where the object is using areas that he store in. eg. A-5

Hopefully, it would make the life of the user easier.

Talking about furnitures saving space, it reminds me of the cardboard chair that I encountered working in a Creative Agency that was trying to bring them into Singapore. If I did not remember wrongly, there were nano technology cardboard that makes the chair  so flexible that it can form into a long sofa set, or a couch or anything. To me, this design falls in between the fun of design and the beneficial to users design. It makes sitting on a chair more fun. However, *the price of it is $1800 for one which is rather expensive! haha would prefer for something more practical*.

Here is a video of how the chair looks like.

Breast Soap Dispenser

Something I encountered on the television show. This is a design which is purely for fun.. Makes life more fun =D so innovative!

and the sibling version =D

So hilarious and this falls under the fun section of user-centered-design for me.

One more example for the other type of user-centered design (Functional)

One of the design that I encountered before was a hand pressing torchlight. It totally requires no battery. I got this from my mom few years back and she told me it was supplied by energy by a piece of battery paper? It just generate energy from a gear and it would have energy to run the torch light.

Here is a demo

This torch is totally incredible as it is not dependent on battery as a source of energy. Imagine in the case of an emergency like earthquake, many might run into chance that their torchlight is out of battery and they cant have any source of light during the dark. With this torch, it makes their life alot better as the fact that it requires no battery ensures that there is no accident of your torch not working during an emergency. It costed only 1 SGD =).  If we could have some sort of interaction design like this in the near future where the interaction is not dependent of the computer.

Other parts of the world

Some examples I saw on the schools of China doing about Interactive Media

They are doing some things that are similar to us with the use of shadow detection to interact with the design and also movement detection. Well seen them in some of the school videos that we are capable of doing so too.

Examples of on-surface interaction

Just found out some music related interaction on table top surface. They are really cool audio mixer and the change in audio makes me really interested and want to say that this is a cool design. Seems like STRONG FEEDBACK is very important in an interaction design as they would make the user want to stay engage and then explore more of the design. This particular music mixer by the Taiwanese is the one. Enjoy.

Another less appealing similar piece by ht hongkies

They could be make it better by having the audio more soothing to the ear.
One recommendation from the netizens were that if they could implement a battle system to this tabletop so that they can compare with their friends.
Added to the observation that users are more engaged when there’s competition.

Back to Digital interaction….

Use of interaction design that helps improve our life- A guide in the museum that guide people into the art galleries in the huge Taiwan museum. That is the way! An user-centered interaction design makes people’s life better.

Seems like the Taiwanese are good with user-centered design.. Got some juice from them that they really design things for the better of the user.

Here is the iBoard by them.

This iboard allows advertisements to be played at public boards for promotion purposes. It makes sure that the video plays only with a person standing infront of that. One disadvantage is that the people that walk outside of the range gets to see a still image only. However that disadvantage leads to the advantage of this design. It draws the user closer to the board, forcing them to be attracted by this advertisement and to stand still infront of the board to watch the complete advertisement. Imagine in a busy country like Singapore and Hong Kong, where the people are all walking so fast and rushing, getting them to stop for a full advertisement is not easy and this idea solves the problem. With a single person drawn to this advertisement and stand there, more will be drawn due to curiosity. The flawless strategy of marketing.

Bravo =)

iWindow (same as iBoard)

Another example of how interaction design is used on marketing.

e

We, Interaction designers, could make a difference to the world. Imagine that the future of marketing and advertisement is all about Interaction, where we sell whose interaction design is better to draw customer’s attention.

A way of pointing interaction to view photo gallery

An mount up version of touch screens. Could this be the future of advertisement and marketing? Replace all the dead posters in the subways and bus stops to these  screens. Would you be interested in them more? Would you spend more time exploring the content? Now people in the marketing world should start investing in us interaction designers. =)

More More More Pointing technology.

This 1 look similar to our Fusion interaction design last year where they have cards to load different profiles. Maybe Advertisements banners in the future could be interactive and the user could watch different type of interaction with different cards loaded?

An interaction with music instead. The user body language seems more interested rather than the one that uses pointing only. Seems like music works better because it has better and faster feedback compared to the one that requires pointing only.

Seriously they look so interested with audio feedback which is better.

OMG this is so cool… actually visuals can be stunning too for those experimental ones. This one is a LED shadow dance that fuses interaction design with ART!!!!!! its a performance art that created thru the user’s interaction with the light to cause shadows.

In my opinion, this would be too advanced to bring into normal interaction design… It is totally stunning. But it could be the future of our interaction design because the work is speechless.

Combination of music, sound and performance art.

Do you believe it? these cubes are responding to the music that it is playing. Awesomeness for the pure fun of music and the cubes. This piece of work is just a design that is for fun, it does not make my life better =(. It only provides me fun that matches the visual with the music. An Art piece =D.

Dining Table.

Inspirational innovation by Taiwanese on making the dining table more fun where the family can sit down together. An user-centered design. It not only lets the waiting time on the dining table for the food to be serve less torturing, it also allows family to sit together and bond together and have a chat on the similar topic. I also observed that kids sit down on the table so quietly to play with this interaction design. A rare scene as it is so hard to get children to sit down during the meal time and have their mail. Really makes me want to enjoy more of the dining time. One point to note is the table manners haha… Kindly still remember them when playing with it.

xXtraLab.. Not bad for their interaction.. so smooth and professional

“Isnt that from the movie? We had already archieved it.. Hurray!”

History Table

Seriously XXtraLab is so high tech in interaction design..

Their prototype for the future office where u meet ur colleagues in a virtual space. They prototype didnt work for me as something seems to be missing in their prototype. Somehow mutual communication seemed to be missing and the office seemed so dead to me. Hence, I would prefer a real office then that. Maybe their design could add a real-time microphone where they can talk?

Another professional multi-touch table by XXtraLab. A combine of high end technologies in interaction design. Interaction could involve our mobile devices in them too. =D

XXtraLab Interaction Exhibition at the court of Taiwan

Observation: Seems like there is too many on screen interaction (2d)… We will need more 3D physical interaction in the future to make interaction design more fun imo. 2D are getting overused and boring… Physical is better? Maybe can do a survey on this? haha….

Example of Physical Interaction

This is awesome. It makes life so fun climbing the stairs. This Sony building stars is really successful. It makes me wanna use the stairs so much.

A similar one showed to us in class by Interaction Design module.
Interaction design seem so fun after watching so many videos.

Daito Manabe

Another guy I encountered during research on Interaction design. He is a crazy guy…. He’s ideas make the things so fun.. SO COOOOOOL!!!!

Reminds me of Cadberry advertisement..

Imagine this as the future of Interaction Design =D SO FUN.. who would dare to wear them?? But its hilarious..

This guy is insanely fun !! Really hope some1 dares to implement this in interaction design…

More of his videos

He seems to really push the boundaries of interaction design that he creates the high end interaction design. He implements fun and craziness in his interaction design which at first I thought the most comment interaction design is about screen and 2d multi touch screen. But after knowing this guy, I realised the gap between us and his interaction design is sky wide apart…

IMPRESSED AGAIN, he is making a AIR GUITAR…

WTF!! these japanese are using Nintendo Wii remote and Nintendo DS to be a DJ… they are using the way they swing their arms and press the ds to manipulate the music… I am Speechless.. Are they from the future or what? I think I am in doubt that Taiwan are best at interaction Design now.. I think the japanese are.. this guy is sufficient…

A clearer Version of his Wii DJ

I dunno what to type at the moment…..

His latest experimental design which causes your face to look like zombie…
“Why is everything you do so cool.. I’m Jealous” – by a netizen
“I feel like im watching something outta the year 3000.”- another netizen.

Japanese are insane… The future of Interaction Design? Holograms?

Totally new high end technology I had ever seen before… Crazy…. Again by Daito Manabe

Future City? Lightings interactive with sounds..

Back to Taiwan
Some of the interactive work by the Taiwanese.. somehow Daito’s technology seems like he is the future of interaction design..

Educational Interaction using Fossils.. Interesting

Chinese Painting using Body, also new to see

the ones we see in shopping centre

Summary: Daito Manabe= the future of Interaction Design?
Speechless….
